River Continues To Roll

Whether it’s on the road or at home, River Plate find a way to fill the net with goals and are presently the team to watch in the Uruguayan tournament. Saturday this was not the exception as they trounced Progreso 3-0 at the Parque Abraham Paladino. This result made it 28 goals in seven matches for the darsenero so far this tournament.

Goalscoring wunderkind Jonathan Urretaviscaya scored once again and is giving national team coach Oscar Tabarez more reason to look in his direction for some offensive firepower for La Celeste. River were able to take advantage of a suspect Progreso side early on with Henry Giménez goal in the 7th minute courtesy of a penalty kick given by referee Jorge Larrionda. This goal made embedded him atop the goalscoring leaders of the tournament.

That goal quickly changed the complexion of the game, and left various holes in the Progreso defense as they were forced to play further up whenever they had the ball. The visitors still applied immense pressure throughout the first half but were not able to seal the deal in the first half.

Yet for Juan Ramón Carrasco’s team it was evident that the team could score at will and proved it once again in the second half. Urretaviscaya scored in the 62nd minute and the final dagger was slammed home by Jorge Zambrana as Progreso slowly gave in to the River Plate pressure. The result allowed Carrasco’s men to maintain the top spot in the Uruguayan Clausura but still have Nacional clipping their heels with a gritty 1-0 win against Central Español at home.
