Valentine’s Day Massacre
Argentine football was in a panic after going 0-for-three in the first week of Copa Libertadores play. So what better team to end that streak than the reigning champs. That is exactly what they did as Lanús easily handled their Uruguayan counterpart Danubio in Southern Buenos Aires.
El Granate was dangerous on every attack and the threat on the Danubio goal. The draw came unexpectedly courtesy of a quality freekick by Abelanda that allowed the Uruguayans to draw even at the half. When they got back onto the pitch, the Argentines had the desire and the know-how as to how to earn the three points in their opener. The go-ahead goal was pushed in by Lautaro Acosta, only to see Danubio go on the offensive for the rest of the game. Their attack was so effective that they came close to equalizing towards the end of the match. José Sand would put the final nail in the coffin when he would bury a Pelettieri pass into the back of the net in prior to injury time.
Lanús 3-1 Danubio
LAN: Pelletieri (9′), Acosta (58′), Sand (87′)
DAN: Abelanda (37′)
